Since 1987 the Hinton Luge Association has maintained a great track that offers beginners a safe place to learn as well as providing challenging sections for more advanced sliders.   In addition we have a warm lodge in a beautiful setting with an incredible view!

We are located near the top of the Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre approximately 20 km north of Hinton just off Highway 40.  Our track is hard packed snow, approximately 900 meters long with a 12 corners.   Where required, safety boarding has been installed along corners for protection of athletes and spectators.   Traditionally our track is ready to slide by early to mid January.  Our track is well maintained and is normally used on the weekends for athlete training, clinics and fun for the whole family.   Arrangements for mid week “Learn to Luge” clinics for schools and other groups can be made as well, keeping in mind changing weather patterns.

We would like to invite anyone interested to come out and learn to slide with us.   Sliders can go either as slow as they like, or once trained, as fast as they feel comfortable going.

In addition to sliders, families, spectators and volunteers any newcomers are always welcome!

Since our inception, we have hosted and continue to host many competitions including North American Championships, Canada Cup races, Western Canadian Championships, Alberta Championships, Alberta Winter Games as well as many provincial and local events (Winter Magic Festival, Club races).

Races are usually scheduled to start at approximately 9:00am and completed by early afternoon Saturday and conclude by 12:00pm Sunday.   Spectators are advised to dress for winter and be willing to walk uphill to experience the thrill.

The weather patterns at our facility are very stable, resulting from inversions.   As a rule with schools for outdoor activities, the cancellation temperature is around -16 degrees C.   It is best to phone ahead to find out if sliding has been cancelled.   Events usually go ahead.

Learn To Luge Clinics - $25.00/person including 3-4 hours of instruction, a sled and safety equipment.   Sessions are offered every weekend except when we are out of town for races.   Midweek sessions can be arranged.  Please dress warmly and call ahead to confirm availability.   Clinics start at 10:00am.

Summer:   Our facility is connected to many trails of the Nordic Centre which makes the summer hiking around us great. We have the view from the Athabasca  Lookout Tower which includes the lookout point over the fantastic Joachim  Valley and the view to the North from our lodge.

Fall:   We offer learn to luge wheel clinics mid September to Late October depending on the interest generated from our local Information Fair.

ALA Membership:   $15.00/family/year - For insurance purposes, waivers must be signed.

HLA Membership fees:

Option A:
$30/year for families when providing worker(s) for 6 bingos events.   A schedule is provided upon request.

Option B: $300.00 (family/individual) /year when working no bingo events.   Individuals and families are responsible to pay for all expenses for all out of town events.

Come out and see for yourself what Luge in Hinton is all about (Please phone ahead to slide).
